How does it work? I have taken a lot of time and care to make sure the benchmarks are clearly organised and labelled. My explanations spell it out so it’s clear what the data means, so you can focus on benchmarking your performance. Here’s how it works:

  1. Collect your data, usually only 8-10 data points per period

  2. Use the formulas provided to calculate your performance

  3. Look for trends and patterns, strengths and weaknesses

  4. Use your findings to plan performance improvements

  5. Revisit every period to see how you have progressed

Where do the benchmarks come from? My approach combines a number of methods including surveys, interviews, market research and private company data to form the benchmarks.

How should I reference the benchmarks? Easy. Include as the source “BenchmarkDB Performance Benchmarks” on your slides.

An Ode to Benchmarks

We need to talk about benchmarks.

Benchmarks don’t get much attention, but they should. They are a super efficient and elegant way to understand performance and find ways to improve.

Benchmarks are a wonder.

Thanks to benchmarks, people across industries, companies and disciplines measure true performance. They are useful. They are simple. They are accessible.

But benchmarks are rarely used. They are ignored. They are put in the too hard basket. Something you pretend doesn’t exist. Hope no-one notices. Especially when you have to start from scratch every time.

But now more than ever, we need benchmarks.

Navigating today’s ever changing world requires looking at the data from your own books, but also placing that data in context with the rest of your industry.

Benchmarking is that context. It provides a company-to-industry analysis that communicates a better assessment of true performance.

“I never plug products. I made an exception for BenchmarkDB because I’ve benefited greatly from it. Almost 30% revenue growth in 90 days. I now understand why having a measurement system in place is valuable. These benchmarks are essential.”

“Within 10 minutes I already had three new initiatives planned that increased revenue by 25%.”
— Founder of a $100M ARR Company

“As some organizations grow, the leaders think, 'My job is just to focus on the big picture.' At Amazon, leaders are expected to know what's happening with their business at an incredible level of detail. You can't get to a place where you don't know if your business was better this week than it was last week or this quarter over last quarter — otherwise, it will continue to get worse, undetected.”
— Former Amazon Executive
